The rate<br \/>\nat which energy is dissipated is directly proportional to the rolling friction force on the ball,<br \/>\ndespite the fact that the net work done by the friction force is zero. The energy loss arises from<br \/>\ninternal friction within the ball due to compression and expansion of the ball in the contact<br \/>\nregion. Since the compression force is larger than the expansion force, an opposing torque arises<br \/>\nthat reduces the angular velocity of the ball.
