Arendatav FLAMES (Floating Light Activated Micro-Electrical Stimulators) tehnoloogia p\u00f5hineb v\u00e4ikestel pooljuhtseadmetel, mida kaugjuhitakse optilise fiibri abil. Optilisse fiibrisse saadab signaale madala v\u00f5imsusega infrapunasel lainealal t\u00f6\u00f6tav laser. Seade opereeritakse seljaajju nii, et see v\u00f5ib vabalt koes ringi liikuda. Millimeetri suurusj\u00e4rgust v\u00e4iksem seade on esimene omalaadsetest, millel puuduvad v\u00e4ljaulatuvad \u00fchendused. Patsient v\u00f5ib seadet v\u00e4lise juhtpuldi abil laserseadme ise sisse v\u00f5i v\u00e4lja l\u00fclitada. Laser aktiveerib omakorda FLAMES s\u00fcsteemi. <em>In vivo<\/em> katsed rottidel t\u00f5endavad seadme t\u00f6\u00f6v\u00f5imet ka s\u00fcgaval seljaaju kanali sees. Seadmel puuduvad kuluelektroodid. Lisaks on materjalivalikuga suudetud v\u00e4ltida autoimmuuns\u00fcsteemi reaktsioone.
