Tehnoloogia p\u00f5hineb orgaanilise v\u00e4rvi baasil tr\u00fckitud paneelidel. Algusaastail oli tehnoloogia kallis, sest paneelide v\u00e4rvides kasutati haruldast metalli ruteeniumi (aastas kaevandatakse keskmiselt 12 tonni, loe <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ruthenium\">siit<\/a>). Seadmete pingev\u00e4ljund oli joodil p\u00f5hinevate voolumehhanismide (iodine mediators) t\u00f5ttu madal. N\u00fc\u00fcd on Graetzel koos kolleegidega v\u00e4lja t\u00f6\u00f6tamas odavamaid v\u00e4rve ja paremaid voolukandjaid.<\/p>\n<p>Uutes v\u00e4rvides kasutatakse molekule, mis koosnevad klorof\u00fcllilaadsetest valgustundlikest elementidest ning doonor- ja aktseptorelektronide gruppidest. DSC paneelide praegune 12.3% efektiivsus loodetakse t\u00f5sta 15 %-ni, mis t\u00e4hendaks pooljuht-p\u00f5histele paneelidele t\u00f5siseltv\u00f5etavamat konkurentsi (mineraalsel r\u00e4nil p\u00f5hinevate p\u00e4ikesepaneelide efektiivsus on ligikaudu 29%).<\/p>\n<p>Graetzeli s\u00f5nul tegeleb tema teadusr\u00fchm ka teiste uuendustega. N\u00e4iteks \u00fcritatakse rohkem p\u00fc\u00fcda p\u00e4ikesevalguse punaseid komponente. Uutes pingemediaatorites kasutatakse joodi asemel koobaltit.<\/p>\n<p>Teadusmaailma huvi \u00f5hukestel kiledel (thin-film) p\u00f5hinevate p\u00e4ikesepaneelide vastu on kasvamas. DSC t\u00fc\u00fcpi orgaaniliste paneelide tootmine on odav, sest kasutab lihtsaid ja olemasolevaid tr\u00fckkimistehnikaid. Belgia teadusinstituut Imec alustab oma raporti p\u00f5hjal Euroopa Komisjoni poolt rahastatava 17 firmast ja organisatsioonist koosneva konsortsiumi juhtimist, mille eesm\u00e4rgiks on v\u00e4lja arendada odavad ja lihtsasti k\u00e4ttesaadavad p\u00e4ikesepaneelid.
