Seade hakkab j\u00e4\u00e4dvustama senistest vaatlusprogrammidest laiemaid, kiiremaid ning s\u00fcgavaimaid \u00f6\u00f6taeva pilte. LSST eesm\u00e4rgiks on j\u00e4lgida n\u00e4htavat \u00f6\u00f6taevast igan\u00e4dalaselt, luues senin\u00e4gematult suure avaliku andmebaasi, millesse salvestatakse ligikaudu 6 miljonit gigabaiti informatsiooni aastas, mis on ekvivalentne tavalise 8 megapikslise kaameraga iga\u00f6iselt\u00a0aasta jooksul 800000 pildi tegemisega. Ent pildi kvaliteedis ning teaduslikus v\u00e4\u00e4rtuses on nende kahe l\u00e4henemise vahel oluline erinevus. Suure resolutsiooniga pildid aitavad anda vastuseid tumeenergia ja tumeaine teaduse probleemidele, uurida maal\u00e4hedasi asteroide, Kuiperi v\u00f6\u00f6 objekte, kodugalaktika struktuuri ja teisi astro- ning fundamentaalf\u00fc\u00fcsikale olulisi n\u00e4htusi. Pildil on kunstniku visandus kaamerast ning proportsionaalsest inimesest selle k\u00f5rval.
