Pildil on n\u00e4ha NASA t\u00f6\u00f6tajat sooritamas peegli pinna kvaliteedikontrolli. Webb teleskoobi laiem teaduseesm\u00e4rk on uurida kaugeid kosmilisi struktuure ning n\u00e4htusi, ise\u00e4ranis kosmilist relikt- ehk foonkiirgust. Maapealsete teleskoopide alaline h\u00e4da on atmosf\u00e4\u00e4rikaod, mida kosmoses ei ole. Webbi teleskoobil on kokku 18 peeglit. \u00dclej\u00e4\u00e4nud 16 peaks valmis saama l\u00e4hema kaheteist kuu jooksul. Kokku osaleb projektis kuusteist USA osariiki. Kosmoseaparaadi peegli kogul\u00e4bim\u00f5\u00f5t on 6,5 meetrit. \u00dcksiku heksagonaalse kujuga peegli l\u00e4bim\u00f5\u00f5t on enam kui 1,3 meetrit ja see kaalub ligikaudu 40 kilogrammi. Suur peegli pindala v\u00f5imaldab koguda rohkem valgust ning seega ka rohkem informatsiooni, t\u00f6\u00f6tlusandmeid.
