The attractive force between positive and negative charges is<br \/>\nbalanced by repulsive \u2018forces\u2019 that are quantum-mechanical in origin. We introduce an \u2018effective\u2019<br \/>\npotential energy that captures the repulsion; it allows us to obtain fairly accurate estimates of<br \/>\nthe bonding properties of molecular systems.
