We consider two<br \/>\ndifferent phases in the evolution of the principle. We pay attention to the fact that some textbooks<br \/>\ndo not dwell on the mathematical meaning of \u2018locally flat spacetime\u2019, which\u00a0can confuse\u00a0students<br \/>\nand, occasionally,\u00a0can also lead to misinterpretations. For example, the non-eliminability of tidal<br \/>\nforces, not even locally, may suggest that the equivalence principle is wrong. By contrast, we want<br \/>\nto show that this is in perfect agreement with the Einstein geometrical interpretation of spacetime.<br \/>\nFinally, in order to check the approximations used in the Gedankenexperiment of an elevator, we<br \/>\nestimate explicitly the magnitude of the deflection of light and the effects of tidal forces in a<br \/>\n\u2018real lift\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We want to shed light on some discussed aspects of the principle of equivalence.
