Pooljuhis tekkivat elektron-auk paari nimetatakse eksitoniks ja teda v&otilde;ib vaadata kui virtuaalset osakest, mis kannab footoni energiat edasi ilma elektrone &uuml;hest kohast teise viimata. Sarnaselt kannab merelaine energiat, ilma et vesi selleks suuri vahemaid l&auml;bima peaks. Metallile langedes tekitab footon plasmoni, aatomituumade vahel leiduvate elektronide gaasis leviva laine, mis samuti kannab energiat ja on k&auml;sitletav virtuaalse osakesena. Plasmonid on paraku &auml;&auml;rmiselt l&uuml;hiealised &#8211; kui valgus langeb metalli pinnale, peegeldub ta sealt kohe tagasi. Samas oleksid plasmonid v&auml;ga head kandidaadid tuleviku elektroonikakiipide nanom&otilde;&otilde;tmeis metalliribades infot kandma, kui nad vaid piisavalt kaugele levida j&otilde;uaks. Harilik vool ei levi metallist nanojuhtmeis reeglina h&auml;sti, suurt rolli hakkavad m&auml;ngima &auml;&auml;reefektid ja asjaolu, et elektroni vaba tee pikkus on samas suurusj&auml;rgus juhtme ristm&otilde;&otilde;tmega. Selleks uurisid Saksamaa, USA ja Korea teadlased v&otilde;imalust piltlikult v&auml;ljendudes plasmonitele aeg-ajalt v&auml;ike m&uuml;ks anda, et nad j&otilde;uaksid edasi levida. Selleks kasutati metalliga kontaktis oleva pooljuhi eksitone. Seni polnud t&auml;pselt teada, kuidas plasmonid ja eksitonid omavahel suhtlevad. Katsega t&otilde;estasid teadlased, et energiat on v&otilde;imalik &uuml;le kanda plasmonitelt eksitonidele ja leidsid ka vastava seosekonstandi &#8211; suuruse mis v&auml;ljendab plasmonite ja eksitonide teineteise tundmise m&auml;&auml;ra.
