Measurement of the Earth’s magnetic field dip angle is a widely used experiment in most introductory
physics laboratories. In this paper we propose a smartphone-aided setup that takes advantage of the
smartphone’s magnetometer sensor to measure the Earth’s magnetic field dip angle. This set-up will
help students visualize the vector nature of the Earth’s magnetic field, especially high school and
first year college students who are not quite experienced with vectors. This set-up is affordable
and easy to use and could be easily produced by any high school or college physics instructor.
