The magnetic moment of a permanent magnet is determined from forces acting on the magnet in
nonuniform magnetic fields produced by two coaxial current-carrying coils. Therefore, the
measurements are performed under well controllable and reproducible conditions. With a
data-acquisition system, the experiments can be done in a reasonably short time. The magnetic moment
of the magnet is in good agreement with values obtained by other experimental techniques. The
experiment is well suited for undergraduate laboratories.
