We propose a simple experiment to estimate the magnetic dipole moment of a neodymium disc magnet.
The experiment employs a precision digital balance and a 1 m ruler to measure the force between two
magnets. The magnetic dipole moment is determined from the slope of the magnetic force as a function
of the inverse fourth power of the distance. The presented activity can be performed by teachers and
students at college or university level to enhance their knowledge of the physics of magnetism.
